Tracing Your Roots

Rick Kittles, a Howard University Geneticist,
has developed a technique that will allow African-Americans to trace their roots all the way back to Africa, not just the continent but to specific
regions. For more information go to www.africanancestry.com (produced a public affairs piece, BET NEWS)
Dying for Diamonds

Conflict diamonds are diamonds mined by rebel
groups to finance wars that terrorize civilians and wreak havoc on struggling African democracies. In the summer of 2000,
the diamond industry promised to set up an international certification system designed to cut off the flow of so called “dirty
diamonds.” The diamond industry failed to set-up any systems at that time.
Humanitarian groups and some members of the Senate pushed for Congress to pass a bi-partisan Clean Diamonds Act, which
would serve to ensure that American diamond retailers had a clean stream of diamonds, by enforcing strict regulations on diamond
import and trade. As a result of international coverage, a public information campaign, and dedicated lobbyists, the Clean
Diamonds Act was implemented in January of 2003.
